Hah. I just figured out how to relight my gas hot water heater.
There was a gas main problem in the area on Monday and the gas was turned off for a couple of days. It was turned back on yesterday and someone from the gas company came in and lit my hot water heater. Late this afternoon I noticed the hot water wasn't as hot as it should be - I checked, and the pilot light on the HW heater had gone out. The neighbor I call on when I need help with mechanical things (or to borrow tools I don't have) wasn't home. I need to give a dog a bath first thing in the morning, and I need hot water to do that. So I figured "how hard can it be - it only took the gas company guy 10 seconds to light it. I can do this......." so, armed with a flashlight and some small wooden matches, I figured out how to do it. It was very satisfying when I got the pilot lit, and almost thrilling to hear the "whoosh" of the burner going on a couple of seconds later.
I made myself a little drink to celebrate. Raspberry vodka and orange juice is even better than I expected it to be. ;D

Much better than the "whoosh" when one sets one's hair on fire, which is what I would've done, I'm sure.
