Mike and I have been visiting shelters and as always I fall in love with the older dogs. Yesterday it was a HUGE akita/chow mix (that's what he was listed as) who was very shy but warmed up to me and leaned on the catch for scritching. The moment I"d walk away he'd put his head up and give a low deep howl.. very sad. I kept going back and he'd be howl/wimpering until I could calm him. I had to leave eventually and his howls followed me. He reminded me of a wolf. I hope he finds a home. This is a nice shelter that keeps them for quite some time. I will keep myself posted on him and when he finds a home.
Anyway mike and I are interested in a puppy... and have been looking through breed descriptoins. I always wanted a pom but.....
I do want a dog that I'll feel safe to be alone with.. the house is right across from the park (literally the front yard is the park) and mike works very late many nights in the winter. I 'd like a dog who will alert me to strangers or when I walk him/her through the park I"d feel secure with. Mini doesn't bark.. ever.. and she doesn't know the meaning of stranger. She greets everyone happily.
I don't want an aggressive dog.. just one that would keep a stranger with bad intentions leary.
I want the dog to be an inside family member. One good with cats and children (this is why I want a puppy.. to properly and aggresively socialize them immediately with all animals and ages of children of all types)
I was looking into newfies but they can be heck on a house.. drooling etc.. tho it's still not ruled out. I love the breed.. my neighbors had one.
I'd like a dog who will give a warning bark but not a breed "known for barking".. as I"m reading some are.. just constant barkers.. we lucked out with Mini.
You know me.. any dog will be loved and cherished as family no matter what quirks. Any breed pop into your head? We are considering going to a breeder MAYBE if our breed isn't in rescue at a young age (many breeds are hard to find young at rescue... and ones that are have some health problems along with a hefty adoption fee... tho again, not ruled out as I am typically against breeding)
So if we DO go to a breeder I may turn to you for advice on reputable ones.
I'm trying to do this slowly and the right way... I want the situation to be the best possible for the new dog and everyone involved.
