Got the kids a new pup since they lost their Dane last month....went to pound to check them out..found a sweetie on death row...had no idea what he was...but got him home even though I was not going to get him...(sign). Found out he is part wieramirer...however you spell it..and part golden ret. but took him to vet following day and of course he has hookworm..on meds..coccidia...same med for that also...Albon..also has kennel cough..that is being treated also..my question has to do with food...he has no puppy fat at 3 months of age....and also has no muscle mass...he was a toss away puppy...beautiful little fellow, he weighs 12 pounds...should be a lot more..Has the golden ret. hair color and the Wier. head and ear shape, but has green eyes. so I think he must be part cat..lol. I have him on Diamond puppy food but since he has not eaten for a long time he now has diarreha...what can i feed him that would be better? This is high in protein. I also have 2 very small Chihuahuas, one of which says Hi come on in and the smaller one says, come near me and die...we also have a ret/lab mix older dog who says, My baby, My Baby. So he is accepted here...he did show food aggression the first day but it is no wonder...I most likely would have too.

I would use a large-breed puppy food, rather than a regular puppy food. The regular puppy food is too rich for the pup right now, but large breed puppy food won't be. You can also mix in some canned pumpkin, or some mushy rice, that should help firm up his stool. A few spoonsful of yogurt with every meal is a good idea, too. Since he's going to be big when he grows up, it's a good idea to keep him lean - but muscular - as he's growing, to help keep his hips healthy. Don't let him get "puppy fat". I'm sure as soon as he builds up some strength he'll be racing around and building muscle.
Poor guy, no wonder he's got diarrhea, with all those nasties in his gut! Be sure to clean up after him immediately after he goes, to keep your other dogs from catching the nasties. If he has liquid diarrhea and you can't get it all picked up, pour bleach water on the spots after you pick up what you can. (1 cup bleach to a gallon of water.)
Your other Chi will get over his resentment of the new baby, I'll bet they get to be good friends, eventually. The green eyes come from the Weimaraner - they have beautiful green or greenish-blue eyes for 18-24 months, then they usually turn amber or greenish-gold. Some weims keep their green eyes all their lives, though. Your little guy sounds beautiful. Enjoy him, and please keep us updated on his progress.
(I'd love to see some pics of him!)

Thank you Noofies, I have both the canned pumpkin and can make him mushy rice..that s no problem...will get the baby some yogart though. Vet said he has been so deprived he might make it to 35/40 lbs...he is very small for his breed and age. I do clean up after him as soon as he goes along with a lot of Great Joe, good jobs being said...I hope he keeps these beautiful green eyes...they seem to look right through you.....I will get some decent pics of him..right now he is a litle bony...thank you for taking the time out of your day to answer me.Dotty

update on Joe...the pound pup...it has been 10 days now, took him back to the vet. He stills has the hookworms and coccidia..but to a much lesser degree...vet said another 5 days should do it..He has gained 4 pounds, very playful despite everything, very loving now...and smart, sits, shakes, walks fairly well on a lease but only for short walks as the coughing begins..the kennel cough has turned into pneumonia so I am treating him for that now also. He gets along fairly well with one small dog t he other does not like him yet, he gets along with the Golden Ret/ Lab mix . that is already here also. Loves the kids and trips you when you turn around as he is always quietly sneaking up behind you to get close, you turn then you trip. lol.

Dot, if you can get some colostrum from the health food store, that will help Joe heal faster. It's especially helpful for the pneumonia. You can either get capsules or powder, doesn't matter which. I'd give him one capsule or 1/4 tsp of colostrum powder 3-4 times a day. It tastes a little like milk, so the dogs (and cats) love it and don't object to having it on their food. You can even mix it with a little water and let them lap it up. It'll help Joe's immune system battle everything he's got going on.
He sounds like a little doll. We need pics!

(Joey, I hope!) Dot, he looks part Weim, part Setter. What an adorable puppy! Total cutie-pie. I'll bet he'll be smart enough to get what you're trying to teach him,, but independent enough to think about everything you ask him to do and decide what he's willing to bother to comply with and what he's not. (Oh heavens, I'd love to work with him "in the fur"! I adore thinking-yet-emotionally/spiritually sensitive dogs.) Whatever Joey's mix, with that Weim in him he's always going to be ahead of the curve when it comes to higher thought processes. Prepare yourself, and enjoy! (BTW, tapeworm, though totally gross, is probably the least harmful parasite... and, a single treatment usually eliminates them.)

Morning, Yes, that is my Joey....he is a smart fellow, already sits, shakes, comes and heels...knows enough to like his oatmeal baths and knows enough to know he likes being dirty better and does get that way as soon as he can...plays with the kids...plays fetch, they throw and he returns all items to me..hahaha.Finally one of the dogs likes me better...so that makes him the smarter of our dogs..lol. It is just a shame he will never reach full height or weight due to his past. But he will be happy here, well fed, loved and vetted.
